Today, we are going to take a look at some dopamine research, showing some surprising things.

Dopamine levels decline with age...

Alright, so there's some good research out there showing that our dopamine levels decline as we age, and this is naturally going to affect things like, for example, our mood, how we perceive the world, and our behaviors.

For example, one study found that in a special game set up by the researchers, older people were less likely to choose risky gambles.

They concluded that, "As we age, our dopamine levels naturally decline, which explains why we are less likely to seek rewards."

Now, dopamine is a chemical in the brain involved in predicting which actions will lead to rewards.

If they boosted dopamine levels of older people they were more likely to take risks again...

And then listen to this: they also found that volunteers chose significantly more risky gambles to win more money when they were given a drug that boosted their dopamine levels.

Dopamine levels decline by 10% for each decade...

This was a pretty new study and it goes perfectly in line with an older study that showed that during your life, your dopamine levels decline with a rate of about 10 percent per decade, and that the density of your dopamine D2 receptors will decline with about 25 to 50 percent over the course of your entire life.

You also get less dopamine receptors as you get older...

Now, this bothers me.

Why?

Well, because if I understood it correctly, the study showing this right here was made in 1987.

And so now you say, "Yeah, so?"

Well, just think about it...

That was even before we had things like today's smartphones and all those super stimulating online adult sites that have now been shown to also mess with your dopamine system if you keep using them too much.

On top of the age related decline we now also have the internet world hammering our dopamine system..

In other words, both our dopamine receptors and dopamine itself will already decline with age as it is.

But if we, on top of that, also keep blasting our brain's reward system with all those modern world's super stimuli, well, you can bet your boots that the decline will happen much, much faster.

So, what can we do about this?

Porn addiction is super destructive for your dopamine system...

Well, the first thing is obviously going to be, if you're addicted to porn, commit to yourself to really do your best to try to overcome that as soon as possible because being addicted to porn really messes with your dopamine.

Limit your social media use as well...

Then, also try to limit your social media use.

For example, what I personally do here is to take kind of a mini dopamine fast every day by shutting off the internet two to three hours before bedtime.

Now, obviously, you should find what works best for you, but this is one way of doing it.

Do plenty of physical exercise...

Also, physical exercise is one of the best ways to prevent the decline of your brain function in general. This goes for the dopamine system as well, as they have found that exercising on a regular basis can even help to upregulate your dopamine system.

Yes, so not only will it help prevent decline, you could potentially even be turning back the clock a bit.

Meditation, intermittent fasting and cold showers might help to mitigate the age related dopamine decline as well...

Meditation may also be helpful, and taking cold showers as well. And then intermittent fasting may also help keep your brain strong and healthy.

In fact, I have personally found that doing a few 48-hour fasts a year can do wonders for my dopamine system.

For example, I particularly remember how good I felt after one of those fasts. Not only did food taste much better, which is obviously easy to understand, but also music suddenly sounded much, much better.

Yes, and this might indeed be a sign that the brain is more sensitive to dopamine again and that there might have been some upregulation going on of those small dopamine D2 receptors.

Build it up slowly...

Now, if you are not used to fasting, then please be careful and build it up slowly. Don't start with a 48-hour fast, but again, build it up slowly. You have to do your own research here, and also if you have any health issues, then talk to your doctor first, right?
